Dachstein Ice Caves & Dachstein Mammoth Cave in Austria
Mountain experience of a special kind: follow the tracks of ice & mammoths from Lake Wolfgang
In the Dachstein Massif you will find two fascinating caves: the Dachstein Ice Cave and the Dachstein Mammoth Cave.
Start your cave explorations close to Hallstatt at Lake Hallstatt, in Obertraun. The Dachstein cable car will quickly take you to staggering heights, exiting at the Schoenbergalm terminus. After approximately 10-15 minutes of walking you reach the entrance to the Dachstein Ice Caves, which has been open for visitors since 1913. A one-hour guided tour will lead you through the world of ice: lit ice domes and glistening sculptures will leave you in awe. A particularly special experience is the Ice Sound Concerts. For more information please do come and see the White Horse Inn info point.
Please do bear in mind that when visiting the Dachstein Ice Caves, warm clothing and robust shoes are required even during summer!
Dachstein Ice Caves followed by the Dachstein Mammoth Cave
Following your visit to the Dachstein Ice Cave it is only a few steps to see the Mammoth Cave (Mammut Cave) as an interesting contrast. Walk through the dry cave with a one-hour guided tour or the adventure guided tours for true cave explorers.
All tours are available in English.
