place of ancient Celtic culture and one of the most beautiful walking routes at Lake Wolfgang
Long before the Christian legend surrounding Saint Wolfgang, the former Bishop of Regensburg, came to life at the Falkenstein Rock, the mystic mountain above Lake Wolfgang was an important Celtic culture site. The “crawl-through-rock” or “slip rock”, a stone which you can crawl through to be freed from your sins, still reminds of these past times in the Falkenstein pilgrimage chapel.
Historic Celtic origins and beautiful walking routes at Lake Wolfgang today
Local regional Celtic customs blend with the Christian legend of Bishop Wolfgang from Regensburg at the Falkenstein Rock. According to the story St Wolfgang led an ascetic life at the Falkenstein. One day he had had enough and threw his axe into the air, intending to build a church wherever he found it again. At the shores of the Abersee lake, today’s Lake Wolfgang, he found the axe and built the first church of St. Wolfgang. Soon after people started worshipping the holy bishop and to this day pilgrims are drawn to the Falkenstein Rock and the pilgrimage church of St. Wolfgang.
