A hiking holiday at the legendary holiday hotel White Horse Inn in Austria will certainly not be enough to discover all the hiking trails at lake Wolfgang.

The hiking trails at the lake Wolfgang around the White Horse Inn are as varied as the landscape. Whether you prefer leisurely walks at the lake Wolfgang, hikes to alpine pastures and through forests or summit tours: the hiking trails at the lake Wolfgang offer just the right thing for every taste.

Hiking map Wolfgangsee: Directions for your hiking tour

The lovely landscape around the Wolfgangsee runs through a network of well marked hiking trails. Starting points for your hike are the holiday resorts of St. Gilgen, Strobl and St. Wolfgang, all very close to the Hotel Weisses Rössl.

Hiking tours in St. Wolfgang

Aschinger snack station (1 hour, ascending)
Like path 3 to the tracks of the Schafbergbahn. Continue straight ahead and turn right 100 m after the Hotel Försterhof, the uphill road through the settlement. Follow this road until you reach the Aschingerbauern estate on a plateau.

Dr. Rais Promenade (2 km, walking time 30 minutes)
From the market place in St. Wolfgang to the Weissen Rössl, past the landing stage, then along the Wolfgangsee on the Dr. Rais-Promenade to the cemetery and back to the market place.

Malersteig - Dittelbach Falls (1/2 hour)
A nice and easy walk leads from the market through bends to the Calvary. The path turns left at the second Calvary Chapel and after about 30 minutes you reach the romantic Dittelbach Falls.

Calvary - circular route (4 km, 1 hour)
From the market square in St. Wolfgang, walk along the street in the direction of Strobl until you reach Hotel Peter. Turn left up to Moarbauer and continue to the fork at Ahornplatz. Now you can turn left over to the Kalvarienbergkirche (Calvary mountain church), immediately after it turn right downhill to the junction Gasthof Hupfmühle and on the road straight down to the chapel in the Sternenallee and on to the Schafbergbahnhof. On the lake promenade we return to the market place. 

Aschingerweg (4 km, 1 hour)
Walk west from the market square in St. Wolfgang to the intersection at Wolfgangerhof, then through Sternallee to Hotel Försterhof. Soon after, you walk up to the right through the settlement and on a mountain road to the Aschinger snack station (open daily except Tuesday). The return journey is on the same route. 

Oberer Riederweg (1 hour, slightly ascending)
Cross the town to the west and keep right at Hotel Cortisen on Sternallee - cross the Schafbergbahn and go straight on into Ried. You follow the high trail along the lake until it descends to the lower lake road.

Jausenstation Holzerbauer (1 hour, ascending)
Turn left at Wolfgangsee Information St. Wolfgang and follow the road to the right past Gasthof Rudolfshöhe, along the large farms over two bends up to Grafbauern. There turn left at the forest and follow the ascending path to Holzerbauer

Rieder - Circular trail (5 km, 1 hour 15 minutes)
From the market place in St. Wolfgang towards the west to the crossing at the Wolfgangerhof, then through the Sternallee to the Hotel Försterhof and over the obere Rieder Straße to Ried to the crossing at the Leopolderhof. Now on the lower Riestrasse along the Wolfgangsee - past the lido Arndt - back to the market place.

Sulzer Circuit (6 km, 1 hour 30 minutes)
By car or post bus you drive to Rußbach. Now go left to the Gasthof Branntweinhäusl, then right through the forest to Radau, across the country road, then first uphill, later flat down to the farm Sulzer and back to Rußbach.

Around the Bürglstein (1 1/2 hours, flat)
Ship station St. Wolfgang Markt - Dr. -Rais-Promenade - local cemetery. Continue along the pavement next to the road past camping Appesbach to camping Berau. After the small coniferous forest turn right into the Bürglpromenade. Follow the road to Strobl.

Aschau - circular route (8 km, 2 hours)
From the market place in St. Wolfgang you walk on the street in the direction of Strobl to the health resort management, there on the half-left branching street past the inn Rudolfshöhe to the house builder and ascending to the farmhouses of Aschau; there you choose the left way, which leads down to Schwarzenbach (on the right branching there is the snack station Mostbauer, except Monday open daily). From Schwarzenbach you go to the Gasthof Bürglstein, then on the footpath and cycle path along the Wolfgangsee back to St. Wolfgang.

The way of the pilgrims over the Falkenstein (2 hours)
Pilgrim fountain from the pilgrimage church in St. Wolfang - pilgrim road to the west - turn right at Hotel Cortisen - Sternallee - upper Riederstraße to Ried - junction with lower road - turn right on the hiking trail to Falkenstein - Falkenstein church (717 m) - Kreuzweg - Gasthof Fürberg (side trip - Ochsenkreuz-Hochzeitskreuz circular trail) - Brunnwinkl - Mondseestraße - Uferweg (promenade to St. Gilgen).

Radau circuit (8 km, 2 hours)
By car or post bus to Radau. Now you walk about 300 m on the road in the direction of Bad Ischl, then slightly uphill on the right to Windhang and down to the Golfhotel. Turn right up to Ischl and follow it upstream to Weinbach and a crossroads. Now turn right to a chapel, there turn left uphill to the farm Pöllmann and continue until a path branches off to the right, which leads via the farm Sulzer back to Radau.

Schwarzensee - Circumnavigation (10 km, 2 hours 30 minutes)
By post bus from St. Wolfgang to Rußbach. Now walk along Schwazenseestraße to the Schwarzensee car park (alternative: with your own car to get here). Now left or right around the idyllic Schwarzensee and on the same way back to Russbach and with the bus to St. Wolfgang.

Mönichsee (2 1/2 hours)
Along the Sternallee to the Wolfgangkapelle (doll museum), turn right, on the Auerriesenweg through the beautiful high forest to the Auerriesenalpe, now quite steep right through a young forest through bends to the Mönichsee.

Around the Wolfgangsee (4 1/2 hours)
St. Wolfgang Markt - Falkenstein - St. Gilgen - Gasthof Gamsjaga - then half left on the old railway embankment - Gschwendt car park - Strobl - Bürglstein - St. Wolfgang Markt.
On the 3rd Sunday in October every year the international race “Rund um den Wolfgangsee”; takes place.

Hiking tours in St. Gilgen

Panorama circular trail (1 - 1 1/2 hours, also possible with baby carriage)
Take the cable car up to the Zwölferhorn, pass the mountain inn in the direction of Pillstein - this is where the easy hiking trail around the Pillstein begins.

Zwölferhorn (2 1/2 hours) No. 855: Good footwear required!
Over the Weißwand to the Sausteigalm. Continue either under the cable car route or over the Elferstein to the top. - The comfortable alternative leads from the Sausteigalm to the right via the Stubneralm and Arnikahütte to the Zwölferhorn.

Around the village (2 1/2 hours)
Walk via Laim, Pöllach down to the lake.

Widinger Weg (1 - 1 1/2 hours)
From Mozartplatz take the Salzburgerstraße to the right under the Bundesstraße and then the Eisenstraße. Continue to Gasthaus Mühlradl and cross the main road, turn right through Widinger Hölzl to Widingerbauern and continue to Reitnergut.

Gamswandweg (2 1/2 hours)
From St. Gilgen along the lake to Lueg, continue to the Franzosenschanze, turn right on the main road, where the hiking trail begins via the Gamswandalm and on to the Weißwand.

Circular route St. Gilgen sunny side (3 hours)
From Mozartplatz turn right along Salzburgerstraße, cross Bundesstraße, follow road towards Mondsee, turn left along footpath through forest to bend Güterweg Obenau, cross small bridge through clearing to entrance Steinklüfte, continue towards Buchberg, Winkl, Fürberg, Brunnwinkl.

Kühleitweg and Langriedl (2 hours) No. 854
Via Laim, at the last two houses at the edge of the forest, the somewhat steep path to Kühleiten begins. Turn left and continue along the Langriedlweg to the Sausteigalm.

Mozartsteig - Fuschl at the lake (2 1/2 hours)
From Mozartplatz, Pfarrgasse, pedestrian lights into Hochreithstraße until the fork in the road, turn right into Laim district until the fork in the road, turn half-left, stay right at "Kochgütl"; house, continue to the edge of the forest or „Annenquellen”;. Now through the forest to the Mozartblick. After a short stretch you reach the high valley of Ellmau, the Gasthof Hochlacken (755 m). From here a road leads out into the valley floor of the Ellmau, to Fuschl am See. Return by bus to St. Gilgen.

Yew Lake Route
Variant 1 (2 1/2 - 3 hours): From Mozartplatz via Steinklüftstraße to Pöllach and Reitnergut. After the old farm the forest path to the Eibensee begins on the left side.
Variant 2 (2 hours): By car direction Salzburg up to the Kleiner-Kapelle, shortly before the Gimsenwirt a narrow hiking trail branches off to the right up to the Eibensee. 

Almkogelweg (2 1/2 hours, good shoes required!)
From Mozartplatz, Steinklüftsstraße via Mondsee-Bundesstraße to Plomberghof and on to Obenau. Approx. 300 m after the farm, the path to Almkogel branches off to the left, which is difficult to see.

Zeppetzauweg (1 - 1 1/2 hours)
Before the Krottensee in Winkel, turn left after the Gasthaus Batzenhäusl into a small flat side valley.

Plombergsteinweg (1 - 2 hours)
Variant 1: From Mozartplatz, Steinklüftstraße via Mondsee-Bundesstraße to Plombergerhof, past the Steinklüften and on the right hand side to Plombergstein.
Variant 2: Good shoes required! - From Mozartplatz, Steinklüftsstraße via Mondsee-Bundesstraße left through Staffelgraben. This is where the steep ascent to the Plombergstein begins.

Josef-Ebner-Weg (3/4 hour)
Via the old Mondseer Straße to the fork in the road (Fürberg signpost), turn right towards Brunnwinkl, along the lakeshore to the steamboat landing stage and to the Gasthof Fürberg (3/4 hour). Continue along the lake into the bay (the path to Falkenstein is on the left). To the right it continues to the Hubertuskapelle or to the shooting range.
There are two possibilities here:
Walking from the Hubertus Chapel to the right you reach the Pike Bay, over the steps the path leads directly along the shore to the Wedding Cross.
To the wedding cross - along the road, after 200 m sign „Zum Hochzeitskreuz”;. The path leads directly to the wedding cross on the right hand side. You reach the bay „Enzelwinckl“;. On the same way back to Fürberg.
On foot or by boat to St. Gilgen. Behind the Gasthof Fürberg a path leads to Winkl - over the Mühlauer Höhe also to St. Gilgen. (walking time Fürberg - wedding cross 1/2 hour)

Schafberg (4 hours, good shoes required!)
From St. Gilgen the Mondseestraße to Brunnwinkl either along the lakeside via Fürberg to Winkl, or along the Mondsee-Bundesstraße to Winkl. Through the village of Winkl to the last houses on the edge of the forest, where the ascent to the Schafbergalm and on to the Schafbergspitze begins.

Via Fürberg to Falkenstein and Ried (3 hours)
Mozartplatz, Mondseer Straße to Brunnwinkl and Fürberg. From Gasthof Fürberg continue in the direction of Seebucht, ascending to the left you pass Kreuzweg stations (the first junction on the right leads to Scheffelblick (772 m)). Straight ahead you reach a meadow hollow, past the chapel with a miracle spring. From here it goes slightly uphill to Sattelhöhe, and on the other side of the Falkenstein the path leads down again.
You leave the forest and come to Ried. If you don't want to use the road leading along the lake to St. Wolfgang, you can hike on the „Riedersteig”; to St. Wolfgang. ATTENTION: Shortly before the edge of the forest, a narrow trail “Tafel Riedersteig”; turns left. This trail leads to Hupfmühle, over Kalvarienberg into Markt St. Wolfgang. Return to St. Gilgen by boat or bus.

Hiking tours in Strobl

Achenweg (1 1/2 hours)
From the Klaus bridge at the lake outflow you walk along the Ischler Ache to the Schlagermühle, then briefly uphill through the „Hölzl”; to the farm Egg and over the Bichlerriedl back to Strobl.

Roman path (1 hour)
From OKA-Heim at the Seepromenade over the Wirerstraße eastwards to the “Seethurn";, then straight on the Römerweg through the “Hölzl"; to the Koglermühle. From there keep right on the road to Weißenbachbrücke (bus stop).

Gallbachweg (1 hour, good shoes required!)
From Gasthaus Weberhäusl in Weißenbach take the road towards Laimeralm to the second bend. There turn left on a narrow path to the Gallbach, where you meet a road again. Keep left again and you will reach the Lichtner bridge over the Weißenbach. On the road it goes back to the starting point. 

Hoferriedelweg (2 1/2 hours)
From Weißenbach over the Lichtnerbrücke (sawmill), first on a forest road to Gallriedl, then on a forest path to Hoferriedl and ascending to the Asenalm (hunting lodge). From there a forest road leads downhill to the guesthouse “Zur Wacht";.

Theresiensteinweg (3/4 hour, good shoes required!)
From Gasthaus Weberhäusl in Weißenbach on the road over Unteraubrücke in the direction of Laimeralm to the first bend, then right on a narrow path to the Theresienstein viewing rock. From there take the same path back a short way, then straight on to the Laimeralm road and keep left on this road back to the Weberhäusl.

Hoferriedelweg (2 1/2 hours)
From Weißenbach over the Lichtnerbrücke (sawmill), first on a forest road to Gallriedl, then on a forest path to Hoferriedl and ascending to the Asenalm (hunting lodge). From there a forest road leads downhill to the guesthouse “Zur Wacht";.

Theresiensteinweg (3/4 hour, good shoes required!)
From Gasthaus Weberhäusl in Weißenbach on the road over Unteraubrücke in the direction of Laimeralm to the first bend, then right on a narrow path to the Theresienstein viewing rock. From there take the same path back a short way, then straight on to the Laimeralm road and keep left on this road back to the Weberhäusl.

Zäpfensteig (1 hour)
From Gasthaus Weberhäusl take the road in the direction of Strobl to the right-hand bend. There first turn left and immediately right and on the Zäpfensteig through the forest to Urschlag, across meadows to Holzerbauer - to Gasthaus Mahdhäusl.
(Alternative: Strobl west entrance direction Urschlag, after approx. 200 meters turn left to Haus Tarzi - to Gasthaus Weberhäusl)

Home way (3/4 hour)
From Strobl west to the sports field. From there on the route of the former local railway approx. 1 km in the direction of St. Gilgen, then left to the farmstead “Breitenbacher"; and to the local history museum “Lipphaus";, across the main road and ascending to the guesthouse Mahdhäusl.

Vitzsparber (1 hour, good shoes required!)
From the former Gasthaus Landauer in Gschwendt (near summer toboggan run) to the farm “Vitz am Berg"; turn left to the viewpoint “Vitzsparber";.

Seaway (1 1/2 hours)
On the road to the Felmayerbad (municipal bath), then on a narrow path along the lake through the Blinklingmoos nature reserve to the Waßwiese bathing area. From here continue to the “Pitznerbauer"; and the Gschwendt boat station. On the former railway line you reach the church in Abersee.

Bürgl Panoramarundweg (1 hour)
From the church along the lake to the Klaus Bridge at the lake outflow. Immediately after the bridge turn left and follow the beautiful hiking trail over the Bürglpromenade to the beginning of the long wooden footbridges leading around the steep drop off of the Bürgl. On the north side through the forest to the east and finally back on the road to Strobl.

Turnaround (3/4 hour)
From Aberseeweg no. 15 at the “Haus am Wald"; to the main road (bus stop), via Simonbauer and Abersee sports field to the Gschwendt boat station (alternative: via Seeweg no. 12 to Strobl).

Aberseeweg (2 hours, good shoes required!)
From the Gasthaus Mahdhäusl briefly in the direction of Schartenalm, then right and through the forest uphill and downhill. Past the summer toboggan run to Niedergadenstraße. Continue in the same direction to Gschwendt (gravel pit) then right under the main road and along the Zinkenbach stream to the Zinkenbach footbridge and over this to the church in Abersee. (Option: via Gschwendt boat station and seaway no. 12 to Strobl)

Brunneckweg (2 hours, good shoes required!)
From the Gasthaus Zinkenbachmühle turn left to the “Schlager";, climb through the forest to the farm “Vitz am Berg"; (alternative: viewpoint “Vitzsparber";) then turn left at the Aberseeweg Nr. 15 towards the gravel pit and back to the starting point.

Aberseeweg (2 hours, good shoes required!)
From the Gasthaus Mahdhäusl briefly in the direction of Schartenalm, then right and through the forest uphill and downhill. Past the summer toboggan run to Niedergadenstraße. Continue in the same direction to Gschwendt (gravel pit) then right under the main road and along the Zinkenbach stream to the Zinkenbach footbridge and over this to the church in Abersee. (Option: via Gschwendt boat station and seaway no. 12 to Strobl)

Brunneckweg (2 hours, good shoes required!)
From the Gasthaus Zinkenbachmühle turn left to the “Schlager";, climb through the forest to the farm “Vitz am Berg"; (alternative: viewpoint “Vitzsparber";) then turn left at the Aberseeweg Nr. 15 towards the gravel pit and back to the starting point.
