Salzburg – city of culture and UNESCO World Heritage Site

Discover the festival town on the Salzach on your holiday at Lake Wolfgang

Majestic Salzburg

With its incomparably charming old town, the city of Salzburg is less than an hour's drive away from the holiday resort of St. Wolfgang on Lake Wolfgang. In other words, this enchanting city of culture on the banks of the Salzach is just a stone's throw away from the Romantik Hotel Im Weissen Rössl, making it the ideal destination for a day trip.

The easiest and most convenient way to reach the state capital of Salzburg, the federal state of the same name, is by car or public bus. Most of the parking spaces in the city charge a fee. After an exciting day exploring the city of Mozart, return to the SPA im See at the Hotel Im Weissen Rössl for some well-deserved relaxation – whatever the season.

Salzburg old town: a UNESCO World Heritage Site

On 1 January 1997, Salzburg old town was officially added to the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The city's residents care deeply about the protection, conservation and careful development of their unique historical city on the banks of the Salzach.

Things to see in the city of Mozart

Discover history and culture at every turn on a walk through the old town. Churches, monasteries, townhouses dating back centuries and, last but not least, the imposing, perfectly preserved complex at Hohensalzburg Fortress await.

Sights not to be missed on your trip to the city of Mozart:

  • Hohensalzburg Fortress:
The mighty fortress built over several centuries by the prince-archbishops of Salzburg sits on the top of the majestic Mönchsberg in the heart of the old town. In addition to regular guided tours of the site, a visit to the Fortress Museum is more than worthwhile to check out the vast collections of medieval objects, including weapons, armour and torture devices. Hohensalzburg Fortress can be reached by foot or using the funicular.
  • St. Peter's Abbey:
The monumental Benedictine abbey has stood here since the 7th century, making it the oldest in the German-speaking territory.
  • Franciscan Church:
Right in the heart of the city lies the Franciscan Church with its narrow tower. The church features a combination of Romanesque and late Gothic architecture. Renowned for the statue of the Madonna by Pacher, the church offers a unique juxtaposition with the bright and colourful St. Peter's Abbey.
  • Getreidegasse:
The main shopping street in Salzburg's old town is a meeting place for visitors and locals alike, the ideal place to meander around small local shops and take a stroll. The gastro scene offers just as eclectic as the numerous shops and the ornamental guild signs hanging from the buildings.
  • Mozart's Birthplace
A must for visitors situated on the Getreidegasse, one of the city's top attractions is the birthplace of the Salzburg native Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.
  • Salzburg Cathedral, Domplatz and Kapitelplatz:
The architectural synthesis comprising the imposing Salzburg Cathedral, the Domplatz, the statue of the Virgin Mary and Kapitelplatz form the heart of Salzburg's old town. The Italian influence is clearly apparent.
  • Hellbrunn Palace:
The pleasure palace, gardens, zoo and famous trick fountains of Hellbrunn lie to the south of the city and are easy to reach by public bus.
