Things to see in the Ausseerland
The Salzkammergut is home to an abundance of breathtaking places, lakes and destinations.
Travel along the Austrian Romantic Road from Lake Wolfgang to reach the picturesque Ausseerland. The traditional attire, Daffodil Festival and Aussee carnival are just a few of the many great reasons to pay the region a visit.
From Lake Wolfgang to Lake Altaussee and Lake Grundlsee
Start the day off right with a hearty breakfast overlooking Lake Wolfgang at the Romantik Hotel Im Weissen Rössl before heading off to the Ausseerland.
Explore the landscape, defined by several peaks and two beautiful lakes: Altaussee and Grundlsee. Both sparkle bright turquoise-blue and exude a mystical energy. The spa town of Bad Aussee is sandwiched in between the two lakes in the part of Salzkammergut that belongs to the province of Styria.
Spring highlight in Salzkammergut – the Bad Aussee Daffodil Festival
The annual Daffodil Festival in Ausseerland is one of the main events on the calendar each year in the Salzkammergut region. Each May, wild daffodils are picked from the surrounding countryside and transformed into fantastic models by hand.
A car parade shows off all of the inventive daffodil creations at the festival. A 'Daffodil Queen' is crowned at the festival each year, kicking off her year-long royal duties – wearing the traditional Ausseer Dirndl, of course. If you choose to stay at the Hotel Im Weissen Rössl, the festivities, music, dancing, art and food are less than an hour away by car.
Traditional local customs – Aussee traditional attire
Residents of Aussee still don their traditional attire with pride to this day. Men wear Lederhosen while women wear Dirndl, consisting of a dark green bodice, a pink skirt and a purple apron.
And don't forget about the traditional Aussee hat, which can only be found in the region. For the people of Aussee, traditional attire isn't reserved for the annual Daffodil Festival; it is worn on a daily basis.
