Cultural holiday by Lake Wolfgang
Experience art and culture
Artistic enjoyment at its finest
If cultural experiences are a must on your holiday, the Hotel Im Weissen Rössl hits the jackpot. Steeped in history and situated in the midst of the stunning Salzkammergut , the region offers a diverse programme for culture lovers.
The Salzburg Festival, Lehár Festival Bad Ischl, art exhibitions
Salzburg, the region's capital, is only an hour's drive from St. Wolfgang. The city boasts the Hohensalzburg Fortress, the Mirabell and Hellbrunn Palaces, as well as the annual Salzburg Festival
Besides the various cultural sights in Salzburg, there are a number of highlights for culture lovers in the Lake Wolfgang region, too.
The Michael Pacher Altar in the parish and pilgrimage church of St. Wolfgang is a must-see during your stay in the region.
The winged altar has a main shrine and two movable outer and two movable inner wings. The shrine is decorated with imposing sculptures and the accompanying wings are painted on both sides and partly gilded. The main shrine tells the story of the coronation of the Virgin. Today the winged altar. with its three panels, is the only completely preserved altar by the painter and carver Michael Pacher.
A few minutes' drive from St. Wolfgang is the summer residence of Emperor Franz Josef I and Empress Elisabeth of Austria. Around the anniversary of the Emperor's birthday, the town is transported back to a bygone era, as numerous traditional clubs, music bands, military regiments and rifle companies mingle with well-wishers.
And Bad Ischl isn't just redolent of the imperial age. A stroll through the town takes you past many monuments, villas and museums. Artists, musicians and notable cultural figures all enjoyed spending time in Bad Ischl, including Johannes Brahms, Anton Bruckner, Franz Lehár, Jenny Groß, Katharina Schratt and Theodor Leschetizky, to name but a few.
I regard the areas around Constantinople, Naples and Salzburg as the three most beautiful on earth
Experience customs and traditions
Tradition and customs are kept alive in the Salzkammergut. Many of the annual cultural events that you can attend have a long history, including the Lehár Festival Bad Ischl, the St. Wolfgang Music Festival and the Lake Festival in St. Gilgen, a folk festival where you are treated to culinary delights in addition to musical performances by local artists. All these attractions and events are within easy reach of the Romantik Hotel Im Weissen Rössl
