Meadows and slopes stretch out languidly from the lakeshore before ascending into steep swathes of forest. The slopes at the foot of the Schafberg offer gentle terrain for every level of difficulty, not to mention plenty of places to stop for a bite to eat.

Up the hill, down the hill! Among running enthusiasts, the Schafberg is a popular route. Running up the Schafberg or running around Lake Wolfgang, the circuit is truly breathtaking.

On October 26, 1972, the starting shot for the annual International Wolfgangseelauf - Salzkammergut Marathon was fired for the first time. The distances of the Wolfgangseelauf range from 42.2 km (Wolfgangseemarathon) to 5.2 km (Panoramalauf). Since 2022, there's also the addition of the "Walk the Lake" event. This is a tribute to the once highly popular Austrian Volkswandertag (People's Hike Day), which is the foundation of the event's origins.

For those who prefer relatively gentle hiking, walking part of the way around Lake Wolfgang is ideal. The route is flat, without any uphill stretches, and you can enjoy views of the tranquil water. Apart from a few stretches, the route follows the shoreline almost all the way around the entire lake.

For Nordic walking enthusiasts, the Wolfgangsee region and the Salzkammergut are perfectly suited. Either take a round at a higher altitude on the Postalm or a gentle round along the shores of Lake Wolfgang. The ideal endurance training awaits you.
